Inter-American Court grants “urgent” measures in favor of 11 political prisoners in Nicaragua

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (I/A Court HR) granted “urgent” measures to protect and guarantee the life and health of at least 11 Nicaraguan political prisoners, including Juan Lorenzo Holmann Chamorro, general manager of the newspaper La Prensa.

The court also required the Nicaraguan State to “immediately” release the political prisoners detained in the context of the political crisis that the country is experiencing.

In addition to Holmann, the Inter-American Court requested the release of Norlan Cárdenas Ortiz, Jaime Navarrete, Osman Aguilar, José Sánchez, Ezequiel González, Denis Palacios, Uriel Pérez, Ernesto Ramírez, Edder Muñoz and Nidia Lorena Castillo.

The court also issued urgent measures to the family nuclei of the aforementioned persons.

Similarly, it required the State “to refrain from prosecuting and retaliating against family members and representatives because of the information provided to the court.”

The measures issued by the Inter-American Court are added to others to which the Nicaraguan government has ignored. In November 2022, the entity declared the Ortega government “in permanent contempt with respect to political prisoners.”

The Court instructed the president of the court to submit a report to the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) on the situation of permanent contempt and “absolute lack of protection in which the beneficiaries of the provisional measures find themselves.”
