Intense sandstorms affect more than 400 million people in China

Judith Pena | April 11, 2023

A wave of sandstorms has been affecting much of China and Mongolia for a few days. In the Asian giant, more than 409 million people in 15 provinces have been affected, according to the latest information bulletin from the Forest and Grassland Administration published on Tuesday by The Global Times newspaper.

Authorities said Beijing, the northern areas of Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang and Xinjiang bear the brunt of the storms.

They highlighted that a localized cyclone and a cold front at ground level caused the strong winds that lifted the sand.

In addition to the sandstorm, the rising temperatures recorded during the previous week have affected normal operation in China.
