He Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery of Cuba began this Monday a specialized consultation for the care of patients with persistent ailments after having had chikungunyareported the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap).
The initiative, described as an “unprecedented experience” in the country, is primarily aimed at people who have Neuropathic pain, joint pain and paresthesiasequelae that can last months after infection.
As explained by the director of the institution, Dr. Orestes López Piloto, the consultation offers comprehensive care that includes specialized medical evaluation, imaging studies, physical therapy and, when necessary, interventions for pain relief, official media reported.
According to Granmathe service is carried out by a multidisciplinary team made up of neurologists, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists and physiotherapists, in accordance with the current epidemiological situation and the needs detected in the population.

During care, each patient will be evaluated individually and, according to clinical criteria, may undergo tomographic studies, ultrasounds or other diagnostic procedures.

López Piloto pointed out that, although it is not known exactly how many patients will attend the consultation, the institution is prepared to assume the demand as part of the Cuban health system’s commitment to comprehensive care.
Chikungunya has caused a significant number of cases in Cuba with prolonged symptoms, especially joint and neurological pain, which significantly impacts the quality of life of patients.
