Rebirth is the title of the unprecedented installation by Siron Franco, one of the main plastic artists in Brazil, composed of 365 suspended mannequins and which intends to celebrate life and hope in overcoming Covid-19, in addition to paying homage to the victims of the pandemic and the professionals of the health.
On display from January 15th, in the garden of the Casa das Rosas museum, the exhibition is the result of a partnership between the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) and the House, managed by Poiesis, both institutions of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the Government of the State of São Paulo.
the inspiration for Rebirth it happened when Siron Franco took a mannequin from his studio in Aparecida de Goiânia (GO) and hung it on a wire clothesline. Upon seeing the scene and the effect of that human representation in the form of a puppet, the installation was born that brings the idea of a population that “floats”.
The shadows created especially by women’s dresses give the impression of a party in heaven, where everyone is dancing. “Those who left, represented by the models, cry out for the integration of peoples, for the understanding that we must love our species and for the defense of equality and the inalienable rights of all. On the clothes, the phrase ‘Long Live the Difference, Live the Humanity, Live the Latin America!’ will be stamped, which reinforces this clamor”, explains Siron Franco.
The mannequins, of different sizes and volumes, occupy the garden of Casa das Rosas and are suspended by a steel cable six meters above the ground. Dressed in colorful clothes, some of them have their “head” covered by a hood that, according to the artist, “symbolizes our insecurity about our destiny.”
Homage
The installation is considered by Siron as a work that also reflects reflections generated by social distancing, the importance of physical contact, the celebration of life. For Marcos Mendonça, general director of MIS, “Rebirth it is a tribute to the victims and also to science and the vaccine, which resurrect hope in people’s lives. The constant advance of science brings us security and health for this new beginning, creating the perspective of new and hopeful times”.
The exhibition takes place during the period when the Casa das Rosas property is undergoing restoration and the museum’s activities are carried out in its garden and through the internet. For the museum’s program at this stage, the general theme “Nasce morte is born” was adopted, based on a poem by Haroldo de Campos, which establishes a strong connection with the title of the installation by Siron Franco.
The House also prepared actions based on the installation, such as literary workshops. The first workshop – Life fictions – is scheduled for January 18, 20 and 27, from 6 pm to 8 pm, and will encourage the production of short fictional biographies of characters who were victims of Covid-19, covering everything from the human to the social dimension.
The second – Grief and Fight Poetry – will take place on February 10, 15 and 17, from 6 pm to 8 pm, and will focus on thinking and writing about death in the poem based on personal and collective pain. Fragments of the texts will be exhibited later, adding to the works of Siron Franco in the garden. The activities are free of charge and to participate it is necessary to register by the first day of each workshop, or until the vacancies are filled, through the website. house of roses.
