Insecurity hits agriculture and worsens the crisis

Agricultura

In 2023, the sector agricultural registered a fall of 4.08%, its worst level in more than 20 years, and although today an advance of 3.64% is observed (between January and August according to the INEI), the president of the Association of Agricultural Producer Guilds of Peru (AGAP) Gabriel Amaro pointed out that this responds only to a rebound effect in the months of March, April and May.

According to Amaro, the activity is also being affected by insecurity, due to criminals who are entering the farms to steal merchandise.

“They break into the farms, but they also steal merchandise from the trucks. This happens mainly in rural areas where police stations need to be reinforced or there are simply no police units,” Amaro told Perú21.

In that sense, he pointed out that it is necessary to promote a new law that promotes agriculture and allows the increase in the production of this activity.

On the other hand, he questioned that the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion seeks to increase the Minimum Living Remuneration (RMV), when it has been falling in various sectors.

“With Law 31110, the payment of the Special Bonus for Agricultural Work (BETA) equivalent to 30% of the RMV was established. Thus, the increase in the minimum wage also impacts us,” he added.
