INPE will drive use of electronic shackles to decongest prisons

Iván Paredes Yataco, president of the National Penitentiary Institute, announced that the use of electronic shackles will be promoted as an alternative measure to effective prison in cases of minor crimes, in order to relieve overcrowding in penalties.

It was also reported that, currently, 60 people meet sentence under this system and that a budget of 6 million soles was requested to expand the number of devices, although this request was rejected by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Paredes indicated that it will be coordinated with the Judiciary for the judges to order the application of this measure.

“We have set ourselves, together with the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, to establish the necessary conversations with the president of the Judiciary and with the presidents of the upper courts of the different judicial districts, so that the judges order electronic surveillance instead of the effective prison in cases of minor crimes,” said.
