The president of the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), Marcos Heleno Guerson, said this Monday, during the program No Censorship gives TV Brazilthat the institute exists to bring people’s confidence in the processes of standardization and regulation of products.
Since 2020, when Guerson took over the institute, Inmetro has inspected more than 7 million children’s products, verified 5.8 million measuring instruments and carried out more than 200,000 inspections.
“People look at the seal [Selo de Qualidade do Inmetro] when buying a toy and this seal is a guarantee that the product has the expected quality. And to get this seal, there is a big process, which goes through the metrological procedure, how I’m going to measure, how I’m going to see if that toy doesn’t leak paint, if it can’t bring a danger to a child, and so on in a series of other products as it exists in society,” Guerson said.
The president of Inmetro also spoke about the Regulatory Framework for the Product, developed by the institute. “Commerce starts to function differently and with a shorter life cycle. In the 80’s you prove a refrigerator to stay 20, 30 years in your house. Today there are people renovating the TV every World Cup. The life cycle of a new technology like this is so short, that traditional process for you to establish a regulation doesn’t support anymore”, he explained.
According to Guersom, you can’t take another six or seven years to make a new regulation for a product, because there is a risk that this product will even have left the market. “You have to be agile, you have to have flexibility, you have to have new instruments. Society has evolved so much in terms of how you verify this, how you use intelligence to look at market issues, that you have to appropriate and use all this technology to your advantage. With the regulatory model, we want to promote this. Instead of telling a company how it has to make its product, it has to tell you what you have to achieve,” he said.
