The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a storm warning, with a severity level classified as highly dangerous, for much of the southern region of the country. The alert comes into effect at 12pm this Monday (8) and continues until 11:59pm on Tuesday (9).
The forecast is for rain exceeding 60 millimeters per hour (mm/h) or greater than 100 millimeters per day (mm/day), as well as winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour (km/h) and hail.
Also according to the notice, There is a great risk of damage to buildings, electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling trees, flooding and disruption to road transport.
The affected areas include the mountainous region, west of Santa Catarina, southwest of Rio Grande do Sul, Vale do Itajaí, northwest of Rio Grande do Sul, western center of Rio Grande do Sul, western center of Paraná, metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, northwest of Paraná, southeast of Rio Grande do Sul and southwest of Paraná.
The west of Paraná, northeast of Rio Grande do Sul, southeast of Paraná, central north of Paraná, central eastern Rio Grande do Sul, north of Santa Catarina, central-south of Paraná, central eastern Paraná and the metropolitan region of Curitiba will also be affected.
Among the instructions for the population, listed by Inmet, are:
– turn off electrical appliances and the general power supply;
– in case of floods or similar situations, place documents and valuables in plastic bags;
– in the event of a confirmed situation of great danger, seek shelter and avoid staying outdoors.
