By phone call from prison, Cárdenas Cartaya explained that on October 19, 2022, by order of Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Espinosa Carbonel, director of the National Hospital for Inmates, the hospital center’s eye doctor, Dr. Anabel Vilches Lago, discharged him from that facility where he was admitted undergoing the postoperative stage of a retinal detachment surgery performed on September 19 at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology (also known as the League Against Blindness), despite the fact that the period of convalescence indicated by specialists.
Cárdenas Cartaya, 46 years old, details that the ophthalmologist who was in charge of the surgery at the League Against Blindness, Dr. Mayelín Chiong Quiala, a retina and vitreous specialist, specified that she had to rest completely for three months and In this way, he left it recorded in his clinical history, a document presented in subsequent consultations at the HNR and by which both the head of the surgery room and the nurses of the aforementioned hospital were governed.
The prisoner claims that as a result of the delicate operation, which lasted two hours, he developed cataracts, adding that he also suffers from myopia, astigmatism and open-angle glaucoma with high eye pressure. It also stresses that Dr. Vilches Lago, despite not being able to perform an exhaustive examination of the operated eye or be able to take his eye pressure due to the malfunction of the equipment available to the HNR, wrote a discharge order and transferred him to the medical post. of building 2 of the Combinado del Este, which does not have the conditions required for the postoperative period.
Imprisoned since October 1, 2002, Cárdenas Cartaya also points out that the medical post is infested with bedbugs, which live in “beds, tables, mattresses”, and cause him an “infernal” itch that has not allowed him to rest or sleep. in the days that he has been hospitalized there.
