Inmate denounces assault of psychiatric patient in Guantánamo provincial prison

Havana Cuba. – The reprisals against inmate Arturo Acosta Ramos continue. On this occasion, he was attacked by an aggressive psychiatric patient, according to what he himself denounced from the most rigorous provincial prison in Guantanamo, where he is being held captive.

Through a telephone conversation that could not be recorded since it took place under the permanent surveillance of a guard, the prisoner from Havana announced that on December 21, 2022, he was transferred to cubicle 7 of detachment 4B, where he is located. a psychiatric patient with an aggressive history and a double personality disorder.

Acosta Ramos went on to report that the inmate, nicknamed “The Patient”, got up in the early hours of the morning and, taking advantage of the fact that he was asleep, hit him on the head with a board that he had detached from the bed. The prisoner pointed out that he tried to get up to defend himself, but the strong blow had stunned him. As he indicated, the psychiatric patient continued to hit him from behind, feet, arms and head, for which he lost consciousness. When he came to, he was in the infirmary, where he was kept under observation for several days.

This information was corroborated by the political prisoner Ernesto Arocha Carta, belonging to the movement For a New Republic, who also added that Acosta Ramos has numerous bruises and as a result of the attack has partially lost the vision in his left eye. In the same way, he pointed out that the victim did not agree to accuse the aggressor, since he believes that due to his condition, what he requires is to be in an adequate facility.

For his part, Acosta Ramos added that this patient has already assaulted two other inmates on previous occasions, to whom he also caused serious injuries, and stressed that this information is known to the prison chief, Lieutenant Colonel Marcelino Bueno Tavera. He also highlighted that Lieutenant Colonel Georvis Cajigal Cantillo, director of Jails and Prisons for the eastern province, stated that no one had ordered that inmate located in his cubicle, and assured him that “measures would be taken.”

Arturo Acosta Ramos, who is a resident of El Vedado, was serving a sentence in the Combinado del Este until he was transferred to the Guantánamo provincial prison on July 21, 2022 as punishment for collaborate with 9/11 protesters held captive in the Havana jail.

Shortly after arriving at Guantanamo, he was attacked by five prisoners and while he was in the hospital his belongings were stolen. When protesting the robbery, he was locked in the “psychiatric ward”, tied hand and foot, naked, to a bed infested with bedbugs, without water or food.

Since his transfer to the Guantánamo provincial prison, he has not been able to receive visitors, since his only close relative, his father, became a hemiplegic due to a stroke caused by a beating by the military when trying to file a complaint about his son’s case. four years ago.
