The Institute of the National Workers’ Housing Fund (Infonavit) maintained that the savings in the housing sub-account of beneficiaries are not lost despite not being used for a mortgage loan.
In a statement, the agency explained that
There is a false belief that the savings for housing that your employer deposits in Infonavit every two months, or you yourself when making extraordinary contributions, is lost if you do not use it to buy a house. However, he insisted that this is false, and even if the resources are not used, they continue to generate income and savings that can be used as a supplement to the pension.
He explained that the workers of retirement age who do not request the return of their resources in the housing subaccount, Infonavit contacts them after nine years by means of email or cell phone messages and, if after that period they have not withdrawn, are deposited in a financial reserve until requested. In the event of the successor’s death, the subaccount may be required by any beneficiary named in a will.
