The InfoGripe Bulletin, from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), released today (8), points to an interruption or a drop in the trend of growth in cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) among children and adolescents in several states. In this group, there were signs of an increase in occurrences in recent weeks.
According to Fiocruz, data on laboratory results by age group continue to indicate a wide predominance of the Sars-CoV-2 virus, especially in the adult population.
Researcher Marcelo Gomes, coordinator of InfoGripe, explained that laboratory data do not suggest that the increased incidence of SARS in the child population was caused by hospitalizations resulting from covid-19.
“Because it is a growth restricted to children, temporarily associated with returning to school after the vacation period, it is possible that this growth is linked to respiratory viruses common to the school environment”, he said.
In the last four epidemiological weeks, the prevalence among cases with a positive result for respiratory viruses was 3.4% for influenza A; 0.2% for influenza B; 6.5% for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV); and 68% for Sars-CoV-2 (covid-19). Among the deaths, the presence of these same viruses among the positives was 0.9% for influenza A; 0.0% for influenza B; 0.9% for RSV; and 93.4% for Sars-CoV-2.
“The study shows signs of a decline in long-term (last six weeks) and short-term (last three weeks) trends. The national curve has been pointing to a lower level than that observed in April, until then the lowest since the beginning of the Covid-19 epidemic in Brazil”, says Fiocruz.
