Inflation travels by road; toll cost will increase

Inflation travels by road; toll cost will increase

Traveling by car from Mexico City to Cuernavaca, Acapulco, Querétaro or traveling on federal highways will soon be more expensive, due to the fact that it was announced that this year there will be an adjustment in toll booth rates.

If you are a frequent traveler, prepare your pocket for the increases that will be applied. For example, if you go from Mexico City to Cuernavaca every weekend, you will pay more for it.

Instead of paying 746 pesos from CDMX to Acapulco, you will have to pay an additional 7.8%; If you travel to Querétaro, the cost will no longer be 304 pesos and the percentage corresponding to the announced increase will have to be added to that amount, according to data from the Traza tu Ruta platform.

This Tuesday the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) reported that the cost of the toll of the Federal Toll Road Network will increase 7.82%, according to inflation for the period December 2021 to December 2022.

This increase will begin to apply from March 1st. “It is reported that the modification of rates corresponding to the highway network concessioned to the National Infrastructure Fund (Fonadin) and Federal Roads and Bridges (Capufe), will begin as of March 1,” the federal agency announced.

However, federal highways managed by different companies will apply the increase differently.

For example, on the Mexico-Toluca highway, Circuito Bicentenario, Toluca-Atlacomulco, Guadalajara-Tepic and Culiacán-Mazatlán, as of this Tuesday the increase was already reflected.

On social networks, users announced that the cost on the Mexico-Toluca highway went from 97 to 105 pesos.

On the Culiacán-Mazatlán highway, which is managed by the company Impulsora del Desarrollo y Empleo en América Latina (IDEAL), the reported increase is around 40 percent. People who travel from the capital of the state of Sinaloa to the city of Mazatlán instead of paying 283 pesos will have to spend 440 pesos.

why they increase

The increase in the cost of fees on federal toll highways is not new, in fact it is allowed to be adjusted each year according to inflation, however, this measure was canceled in 2022 as an action to help the economy of the mexicans.

“It should be noted that the Concessionaires of the Federal Toll Road Network, with prior authorization from the SICT, adjust their amounts annually in the first months of the year as stipulated in the Concession titles,” reported the SICT.

A year ago, the Secretariat announced that the rate leveling would be 7.36% average for roads and bridges under concession to Capufe. “For the Mexico-Acapulco corridor, the Fund’s Technical Committee determined an additional increase within the 10% limit in response to the postponement suffered by the increase in quotas in this section.” But the same day he announced that the increase was cancelled.

How do you know how much you will pay?

If you want to know the data of how much it will cost you to travel by road, you can use the Point to Point Routes simulator or Trace your Route of the SICT where you will not only know how much you will have to pay in tolls but also how much you can spend on gasoline.

The figures that the platform currently contains, which can be used on a computer or downloaded as an app on the cell phone, are with current data, it will be until March 1 to be updated with the new rates.

If you have planned a trip by car to Guadalajara these days, you would have to pay around 1,037 pesos only in booths, plus 922 pesos for fuel if it is a four-cylinder vehicle.
