The Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) rose 0.59% in October, after showing deflation of 0.68% in July, 0.36% in August and 0.29% in September. As a result, inflation accumulates a high of 4.70% in the year and 6.47% in 12 months. In October last year, the IPCA closed at 1.25%. The data were released today (10) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
By groups, the most intense increases occurred in Clothing, with 1.22%, and Health and Personal Care, with 1.16%. The main influences on the index came from the groups Food and Beverages, with an increase of 0.72%, and Transport, which were 0.58% more expensive in the analyzed period. Only Communication showed a drop of 0.48%, driven by the sub-item mobile telephony plan (-2.05%).
According to the IBGE, the items and sub-items with the greatest individual impacts on the IPCA for the month were airfare, which increased by 27.38%, personal hygiene (2.28%) and health insurance (1.43%).
Among foods, the rise was driven by food at home, which became 0.80% more expensive, strongly influenced by the increase in the price of potatoes (23.36%) and tomatoes (17.63%). The IBGE also registered an increase in onions (9.31%) and fruits (3.56%).

On the side of falls, long-life milk was 6.32% cheaper in October, after falling 13.71% in September, and soybean oil fell 2.85%, the fifth consecutive decline. Food away from home increased by 0.49%, with the deceleration of snacks from 0.74% in September to 0.30% in October and the increase in meals from 0.34% to 0.61% in the monthly passage.
Fuels fell in October, with a reduction of 1.56% in gasoline, 2.19% in diesel oil and 1.21% in vehicular gas. Only ethanol registered an increase of 1.34%.
The IBGE also points to a decline in transport by application, which fell 3.13%, after the 6.14% increase recorded in September. The price of urban bus tickets fell by 0.23%, with the reduction on Sundays in Salvador (2.99%).
The Apparel group continues with an upward trend since the resumption of activities after the social isolation imposed by the covid-19 pandemic, with an increase in the prices of men’s clothing (1.70%) and women’s clothing (1.19%). According to the institute, the group accumulates the highest variation in 12 months, with 18.48%.
In Housing, there was a deceleration from 0.60% in September to 0.34%, influenced by the 0.67% drop in bottled gas.
By region, all areas surveyed showed increases in October. The biggest change occurred in Recife (0.95%), with increases in electricity (9.66%) and air tickets (47.37%). The lowest index came from Curitiba (0.20%), with declines in electricity (9.88%) and gasoline (2.40%).
INPC
Also released today by the IBGE, the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) rose 0.47% in October. The high accumulated in the year is at 4.81% and in the last 12 months at 6.46%.
In October 2021, the indicator closed at 1.16%. In this analysis, food products went from a fall of 0.51% in September to a rise of 0.60% in October. Non-food items, which had dropped 0.26% in September, rose 0.43%.
The IPCA reflects inflation for families with incomes of one to 40 minimum wages and the INPC covers families with incomes of one to five minimum wages.
The regions surveyed are the metropolitan areas of Belém, Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Vitória, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre, in addition to the Federal District and the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís. and Aracaju.
