SANTA CLARA.-Through a video posted On her personal Facebook wall, the Villa Clara theater actress Lizandra Martin Martin made an urgent call for warning about the inhumane conditions of the patients hospitalized in the Santa Clara Psychiatric Center, specifically areas 9 and 2 of Las Minas.
According to Martin, the beds are full of bedbugs, the patients have injuries from the bites and many are sleeping on the floor. He also specified that the Provincial Health Directorate was aware of this situation, even with videos and tests and that “everything was there. Nothing changed when they saw the problem.”
The actress specified that she made the complaint from her profile, since the hospital workers themselves cannot make the case visible because they would lose their jobs. “In Cuba, anyone who tells the truth from within is erased, censored or punished,” he argued.
In the shared video, the aforementioned bedbugs can be clearly seen: “The patients of the Psychiatric hospital are human beings, they deserve hygiene, respect and dignified care. I demand an immediate and public response. I demand respect for the life and dignity of each of these patients,” the young woman concluded.
In April of this year, a leaked video on social networks at the “Dr. Luis San Juan Pérez” Provincial Psychiatric Hospital in this province in which a worker brutally beat a patient. The images were captured by a third party who did not intervene to stop the attack.
Complaints about the terrible conditions of this type of centers are frequent. Last September, independent journalist José Luis Tan Estrada denounced beatings, hunger and abandonment at the Psychiatric Hospital of Camagüey. According to Tan Estrada, the sick receive just two tablespoons of rice, sporadic food and broths prepared with bones, without access to proteins.
