Shanghai. Shanghai yesterday reported 51 deaths from covid-19, its highest number despite weeks of confinement, while Beijing declared that the situation in the capital was hard after an increase in infections.

The cosmopolitan business hub Shanghai has been under a near-total lockdown since early April, a move that hit supply chains across the country. In Pudong, the city’s financial district, thin metal or mesh fences were put up yesterday in several neighborhoods under a local government directive, according to Caixin, a Chinese business media outlet. Buildings where cases have been found sealed off their main entrances, leaving only a small opening for health workers to pass through.

The city of 25 million people has struggled to supply food to those confined, with many residents reporting problems accessing regular medical care.

China, the world’s second-largest economy, is struggling to eradicate its worst Covid-19 outbreak in two years with harsh lockdowns and massive testing. It maintains a zero covid policy that has impacted the economy and the mood of the population.

Shanghai, China’s largest city, recorded its first deaths on April 18 despite detecting thousands of cases daily in recent weeks. Data from the National Health Commission indicated that 51 people died yesterday in the megalopolis, which brings the total in recent days to 99 in the city, which registered almost 22,000 new coronavirus infections yesterday. The highest number of deaths in one day had occurred on Saturday, with 12.

Meanwhile, Beijing reported 22 new infections, after warnings from a senior official in the capital that the city must take urgent measures, while authorities closed a housing complex in the center and massive tests were announced starting today.

Health official Pang Xinghuo stated that preliminary observations suggest that covid-19 has spread out invisibly in the capital for a week, affecting schools, tour groups and many families.

Many gyms in the capital are closed. At the same time, travelers are required to have a negative covid test of less than 48 hours and entry is prohibited to people who have traveled to places where a single case of covid has been registered in the last two weeks.

Only one in four patients hospitalized for covid was fully recovered after a year, according to a British study published yesterday, which states that being a woman or obese increases the risk of maintaining health problems.

The pandemic has left 509 million 418 thousand 71 confirmed cases and 6 million 217 thousand 596 deaths in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University.
