INEC reported growth in the main economic indicators from January to September

The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) published the main economic indicators for the months of January to September 2022. In it, some activities have reported growth compared to the same period of the previous year.

For example, the activities of the Panama Canal continued with positive results, since the transit of ships and income from tolls, had variations of 7.2% and 2.1%, respectively. This growth was mainly due to the passage of Panamax vessels, which registered increases of 11.6%, toll revenues of 8.2%, cargo volume of 7.4%, and net tons of 5.9%.

According to the report, the Neopanamax showed decreases in cargo volume 6.5%, net tons 4.6%, deep-water traffic 4.1%, and toll revenues 2.3%.

On the other hand, INEC reported that the movement of general cargo through the National Port System increased by 40.0%; however, the total cargo decreased by 1.8%, due to the drop in the transfer of bulk cargo 3.0% and containerized cargo 1.6%.

There were also reports on the value of trade in the Colon Free Zone, which registered an increase of 45.8%, mainly due to CIF imports at 71.1% and FOB re-exports at 22.3%; likewise, the weight of trade showed the same trend at 20.8%.

Another activity that presented increases was mass passenger transport in the Panama Metro and MiBus with 44.0% and 30.0%, respectively, while the capacity in the corridors increased by 12.4% and revenues by 10.9%.
