The General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE), in a vote divided 6 in favor and 5 against, decided to suspend the holding of the recall consultation on President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, scheduled for April 10, 2022, until the electoral body has a sufficient budget to organize the exercise.
The decision was made in an extraordinary session of the General Council this Friday, the day after the president of the INE, Lorenzo Córdova Vianello, presented a proposal to the institute to suspend the consultation for budgetary reasons.
In favor of Córdova Vianello’s project, in addition to himself, they voted:
- Ciro Murayama
- Jose Roberto Ruiz
- Jaime rivera
- Dania ravel
- Claudia zavala
Against the project they voted:
- Uuc-kib Swords
- Norma Irene de la Cruz
- Carla humphrey
- Adriana favela
- Martin Faz
The only way to carry out the mandate revocation consultation with the resource we have is by touching the fibers of certainty and legal security and I am not willing to do it, because the legislator, correctly, chose the model that has allowed us to renew powers in peace said counselor Claudia Zavala.
Carrying out the consultation with a restricted budget would imply installing a limited number of voting booths, which would reduce the scope of the consultation and, consequently, its representativeness in terms of the volume of opinions in favor or against President Andrés Manuel López Obrador concludes his 6-year term or not.
The INE, aware that the allocated resources are insufficient, has made an effort to adjust the budget, which has been insufficient, so insufficient that it forces us to make provisions, administrative and legal responsibility, said counselor Jaime Rivera during the session.
