INE declares the loss of registration of the PRD, after 35 years of existence

However, Councillor Espadas Ancona argued that it is not feasible to cancel the registration for a “microscopic 0.5%” and that endorsing it is excessive.

This is because he saw an anomaly: the voter, when marking two elections on a single ballot, for a minority federal deputy, also votes for a proportional representation deputy, so it is not possible to distinguish or separate between both votes and they are two different elections, thus affecting the freedom and authenticity of the vote.

“Trying to apply the 3% barrier without further consideration to maintain the electoral register does not seem to me to be a minor decision that can be made without considering that the PRD went to an election where the freedom of the vote and the authenticity of the elections were undermined by the use of the single ballot.

“To pretend that the lack of a microscopic 0.5 percent of votes to reach the 3% required by law has no effect on the deprivation of freedom of voters is excessive,” he argued.

The goodbye

The PRD was the heir to the registrations of the Mexican Socialist Party (PMS), the Unified Socialist Party of Mexico (PSUM) and the Mexican Communist Party (PCM) and with the cancellation of the PRD registration, this historic leftist registration became extinct.

That is why Ángel Ávila declared mourning for Mexican democracy, and lamented that everything he fought against seems to be back: the State party, the one-party regime, against the Executive Branch concentrating the three powers; for a government that would not interfere in the elections.

“The PRD fought for plural and alternative media. It fought for the electoral authorities to count the votes correctly. The PRD fought so that there would not be a single ideology that could dictate the destiny of the Republic (by) trying to have more or less free, more or less equitable elections.

However, “today all these struggles that the PRD led seem to be at risk. Today it seems that we are returning to the old days, where a single party wants to impose a single vision, without consulting the plurality (…) where the opposition is repressed and threatened so that they can vote in Congress, according to the designs of the regime.”

The councillors and representatives of the parties said goodbye to the PRD and hoped to rebuild a national alternative.

“I think it is good news to know that they will be able to apply for registration as a local political party in 13 states: Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Tlaxcala, Zacatecas, Sonora, Guerrero, San Luis Potosí, Mexico City and Quintana Roo,” said Councilor Carla Humphrey.

“And I think that from there, we can also build a new political party, or, rather, rebuild that political party that is so necessary for our country,” he added.

Councilor Claudia Zavala recalled that since 1996, it was PRD women who pushed for equal participation of women in politics and decision-making.

Together with other women, she said, “they led the struggles that today give us parity in the Constitution.”
