Industry creates fewer jobs but pays higher wages

Number of people looking for work for more than two years drops by 17.3%

Industry, the sector that pays the highest average wages to Brazilian workers with formal employment contracts, was the productive segment that created the fewest formal job vacancies over the past year. The information is contained in preliminary data from the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS) for 2023, released by the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) this Thursday (12).Industry creates fewer jobs but pays higher wages

Overall, the five main economic sectors recorded growth in formal employment, with the creation of 1,511,203 jobs. Now, the stock of formal jobs in the private sector increased from 42,957,808 million on December 31, 2022, to 44,469,011 million at the end of last year, a positive variation of 3.5%.

The result was driven by the construction industry, which increased the number of formal jobs by 181,588 (6.8%) in the same period. In the services segment, 962,877 jobs were created, a result 4.8% higher than in 2022. Commerce grew 2.1%, with 212,543 jobs, and agriculture grew 1.9%, with 33,842 jobs, while industry registered an increase of 121,318 jobs, a growth of 1.4%.

“The segment with the highest average salary continues to be industry, with R$4,181.51, followed by services (R$3,714.89); civil construction (R$3,093.97); commerce (R$2,802.51) and agriculture (R$2,668.58),” said the national undersecretary of Statistics and Labor Studies, Paula Montagner, highlighting that, on average, the salaries paid to formal workers in the private sector rose 3.6%, already considering inflation for the period, going from R$3,390.58 to R$3,514.24.

The complete data from Rais 2023, including the public sector, will only be released in the fourth quarter.

When detailing the preliminary results, the undersecretary explained that some results, such as those related to job creation and average remuneration, differ from the registered in the New General Registry of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged)released in January of this year, because the deadline for collecting information from Rais is usually longer. This year, the data was collected until May 31.

The Southeast region continues to concentrate the largest number of formal jobs, with 51.2% of employment contracts. Next come the South (18.4%) and Northeast (16.4%) regions. However, the North (5.4%), Northeast (4.2%) and Central-West (4.2%) regions recorded the highest percentage growth.

Piauí had the highest relative growth among the states, with an increase of 7.3%, followed by Amapá (6.8%), Tocantins (6.6%) and Roraima (6.3%).

“From the point of view of the bond, most are associated with the CLT employees [trabalhadores cujo contrato é regido pela Consolidação das Leis do Trabalho]but there are other situations worth highlighting, such as the number of apprentices, which increased from 55,493 to 546,260, and temporary workers, which increased from 209,654 to 226,144”, said Paula Montagner.

According to the undersecretary, the number of casual workers increased from 92,716 to 121,044, but there was a slight drop in the total number of workers who had fixed-term contracts[from148553to133968[de148553para133968

According to data from Rais, women occupied 40.9% of formal jobs in the private sector in 2023. By age group, compared to 2022, there was a slight reduction in formal employees up to 39 years of age, and a significant increase in older employees, especially those aged 40 to 49.

The Rais also assesses the nationality of formal employees. The group that grew the most in the last year was Venezuelans, who totaled 124,607 formal workers last year, followed by Haitians (44,481) and Paraguayans (13,469).

“There was a slight increase in the proportion of people with disabilities, which, in the stock of formal employees, rose from 1.27% to 1.28%, growing mainly due to the inclusion of people with physical or multiple disabilities”, said Paula Montagner.
