HOLY SUNDAY.-The Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic is still trying to understand why the Executive Branch included the importation of plastic lids in the proposed observations to the Law on Solid Waste Management, returned to the National Congress last week.
Mario Pujols, Executive Vice President of the AIRD, stated in response to questions from the press: “we are very concerned about a measure that would directly impact the food and beverage sector, the alcoholic beverage sector and the entire pharmaceutical sector.”
“These,” stated the businessman, “are lids that are not manufactured in the country.”
He pointed out what was surprising about the Executive Branch’s proposal, because this importation would be prohibited 60 days after the law came into effect.
He explained this is an aspect “that had not been put on the table in the eleven months that we have been discussing this issue and that has taken us by surprise.
According to Pujols, businessmen are looking for the appropriate spaces to understand the reasons of the Executive Branch to include this aspect in the observations made to the aforementioned Solid Waste Management law.

The businessman answered questions about the observations of the Executive Branch while attending the breakfast of the National Network of Business Support for Environmental Protection (Ecored).
In this environment, Christy Luciano, president of the entity, also referred to the issue, stating that the correct management of solid waste is a shared responsibility between the State, businessmen and citizens.
The prosecutor of the National District, Rosalba Ramos, also spoke there, highlighting that companies that damage the environment are no longer only exposed to administrative sanctions, but also to direct criminal proceedings, with million-dollar fines, suspension of operations and even permanent closure.
The prosecutor referred in this regard to the combined action of the New Penal Code and Law 64-00 on the Environment.

A commission of 11 Senators has been in charge, within one week, of analyzing the observations of the Executive Branch to Law 225-20 on Solid Waste Management. The return occurred last week.
