Industrialists demand state support for sustainability

The Federation of Chambers and Associations industrial of Central America and the Dominican Republic (Fecaica) demanded this Saturday the “articulation of efforts” between the private sector, States and consumers of the region, to deepen business practices of sustainable development.

The subject was exposed in a telematic meeting of the Central American industrial sector, in which they addressed the evolution of the sustainability in trade and strategic allies.

The Fecaica companies highlighted “the importance of this being an articulation of efforts between the different sectors, government, business and consumers, not only in regulations, but in incentives to be able to venture into these sustainable practices,” according to the member of the organization Susana Vásquez, representative of Phillip Morris International.

According to businessmen industrialthe Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations Organization (UN), although they are not binding, promote competitiveness and cause “regenerative development” in value chains.

“The sustainability It has become mandatory to compete, generating a multiplier effect in the value chains, identifying the negative impacts in each sector to turn them into positive ones and not just talking about sustainable development, but regenerative development for the damage we have already caused”, pointed out, for his part, the manager of Sustainability for Central America from Enst & Young, Manfred Kopper.

Guatemala’s representative to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Marco Tulio Molina, stated that, in order to make Central American efforts compatible with sustainable development, it is necessary to “promote a better relationship” between governments and industries. “These strategic alliances and this exchange of information are essential,” he emphasized.

The SDGs, a total of 17, are universal, and are made up of 169 goals and 231 indicators that seek to achieve, by 2030, prosperity, peace, alliances, universal equality, non-discrimination, as well as the protection and promotion from the human rights.

Fecaica brings together about 7,200 entrepreneurs industrial from Central America and the Dominican Republic.
