In 2021, the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI), through its Directorate of Operations and Conservation of Irrigation Systems, developed an extensive cleaning program for irrigation and drainage canals, among other tasks.
For this, according to the agency said in a press release, an investment of RD $ 290.9 million was made, directly benefiting some 100,000 irrigators. These actions responded to the guidelines drawn up by the executive director of INDRHI, Olmedo Caba Romano, in compliance with the commitment assumed by President Luis Abinader to maintain full support for national agricultural production to guarantee food security.
Through this program, the cleaning of canals, drains and berms was carried out, as well as the reconstruction of walls, in a length of 1,756.15 kilometers, executed with heavy equipment and brigades of workers throughout the national geography, as well as works in 286 works minors, with an investment of RD $ 145.9 million.
Other tasks carried out through this direction were the repair and installation of 131 units of pumps, motors, transformers and accessories worth RD $ 111.1 million and wells worth RD $ 33.2 million were built or cleaned. RD $ 607.6 million were invested in the inspection of dams.
These actions were carried out in the 10 regional directorates of INDRHI, namely: Lake Enriquillo in Bahoruco and Independencia, Yuna-Camú, in the Monseñor Nouel and Sánchez Ramírez provinces; Valle de San Juan, in San Juan, and Elías Piña, among others.
