Through a statement, the Pro Santa Cruz Civic Committee assured that “individual interests should never be above the common good,” referring to the judicial ruling that benefited private parties over the protection of the natural area.

“The Pro Santa Cruz Committee expresses its strong rejection and deep concern in the face of recent judicial decisions that threaten the integrity of the Ecological Cordon of our city. This ruling not only violates one of the most valuable natural heritage of Santa Cruz, but also puts the life, safety and future of thousands of citizens at serious risk.“, begins by indicating the document, which is already circulating on social networks.

The citizens emphasize that “the Ecological Cordon, recognized and protected by various local, departmental and national regulations, constitutes a fundamental bulwark for environmental sustainability, the mitigation of natural disasters and the preservation of our biodiversity. Its destruction or weakening creates a dangerous legal precedent, which opens the doors to particular interests that privilege economic gain over collective well-being.

That is why “Individual interests should never be above the common good. “We demand that the competent local, departmental and national authorities firmly and responsibly assume the defense of this natural heritage, applying the law in a fair and unwavering manner.”

From the Pro Santa Cruz Committee, “We call on the entire population, institutions and social sectors to remain vigilant and united in protecting the ecological cordon. “Defending it is defending life, the future and Santa Cruz identity.”

From the Departmental Legislative Assembly

Along the same lines, the Departmental Legislative Assembly (ALD) issued a statement in which they expressed “their resounding rejection of the ruling issued in the constitutional protection hearing on December 23, which endangers the integrity of the Metropolitan Ecological Protection Park of the river Piraí, known as the Ecological Cord.”

According to the departmental legislators, “this decision is vulnerable to municipal, departmental and national regulations. Turning a vital area into a threat to the security, environmental balance and quality of life of thousands of Santa Cruz residents.”

Therefore, “The Departmental Legislative Assembly of Santa Cruz reaffirms its commitment to the defense of the Ecological Cordon and demands compliance with Law 1037, which declares the protection and restoration of this ecosystem as a national priority. “We call on institutions and social sectors to remain united and vigilant in this cause.”

From the Municipal Executive

The mayor of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Jhonny Fernández, rejected the constitutional ruling that favors a businessman seeking to develop land in the Ecological Cordon, a protected area known as “the lung of the city.”

“As long as I am mayor, the Ecological Cordon will not be touched. It is a protected area and we will continue to enforce the law“said Fernández during a press conference.
