The president of the Permanent Commission of Indigenous Peoples of the National Assembly, representative Nicia Maldonado, offered a management report for the year 2024, in which she highlighted the defense and protection of knowledge, traditions and identity.
In this sense, he referred to the Bill for the Safeguarding and Transmission of Ancestral Wisdom in Indigenous Boys and Girls, which was elevated to the Parliament’s directive to be submitted to the consideration of the Plenary of the National Assembly for its approval. first discussion, according to the AN press release.
In this regard, he explained that the instrument seeks to transmit and preserve the ancestral culture of the native peoples to future generations, thus guaranteeing its perpetuity and permanence over time.
The proposed law recognizes as native means of ancestral transmission dance, singing, stories, arts, indigenous games, musical artistic expressions, crafts, hunting, fishing, farming, recreational and sports.
Maldonado indicated that with the proposal, the commission also seeks to address the forms of transculturation that have affected indigenous peoples.
“Traditional indigenous knowledge must be transmitted to younger generations. This will guarantee that it lasts over time,” said the deputy.
“The purpose of this law is to ensure that indigenous boys and girls have the full enjoyment of their right to collective and community life outside of school together with the elderly, elderly men and women, grandfathers, grandmothers, wise men and women, and the rest of the members of each indigenous people to which they belong,” the project states.
Dissemination of laws
Maldonado stressed that in the last months of this year the commission was deployed to all the indigenous communities of the country in Street Social Parliamentarism to disseminate the laws sanctioned by the National Assembly, especially the Law Against Fascism, Neofascism and Similar Expressions; and the Organic Law of the Special Jurisdiction of Communal Peace Justice.
He explained that the objective is for indigenous communities to become aware of the work carried out by the Legislative Branch and the Executive Branch in order to guarantee the rights and duties of all Venezuelans, without any distinction.
Projects
During the last period of 2024, the commission held 29 meetings and presented nine draft agreements, highlighting the commemoration of the Day of Indigenous Resistance, approved in the Parliamentary Plenary on October 10.
He explained that the agreement contemplates commemorating and claiming October 12 of each year as the Day of Indigenous Resistance throughout the national territory, as well as supporting the Americanist affirmation for unity and cultural diversity to strengthen the indigenous peoples in the spirit. of dialogue, civilization, peace and justice.
He explained that other agreements presented were for World Earth Day; the Day of the
Afro-Venezuelanity; the International Day of Indigenous Peoples; World Animal Day; the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery; for the death of Nelson Mandela, as well as the commemoration of the execution of José Leonardo Chirinos.

On the other hand, Maldonado specified that the commission’s work agenda was also framed in the discussion and preparation of the Special Law Project of the Popular Power of Habitat, Lands and Ancestral Communal Territories for Indigenous Peoples and Communities, whose objective is to make visible the exercise of ancestral power in the territories of indigenous peoples.
It also seeks to link the organization in the ancestral communal territories to work with the indigenous communities to demarcate their spaces and guarantee legal instruments that reflect the true power of these peoples.
