Various leaders of the indigenous communities of Venezuela and Colombia held a meeting in the town of Paraguachón, Zulia state, this Saturday, September 24.

In this meeting, the indigenous leaders demanded from the authorities of Venezuela and Colombia the self-determination of the peoples, as well as preferential treatment “for the great Wayúu nation.”

They also agreed that they will write a document so that the owners of the ancestral lands of La Guajira are taken into account.

Rosa Iguarán Epieyu, indigenous leader and representative of the Wayúu people, assured that the meeting’s priority is to shake hands of brotherhood, “analyzing what we have been experiencing, with great expectations before the reopening of the border.” However, she expressed that this reopening will only be pedestrian.

He stated that at the meeting they discussed binational trade between Venezuela and Colombia, in addition to the family basket. “They are of great importance to the Wayúu people.”

The meeting began with a ritual where spiritual elements were present, since it is a border that has experienced situations of violence.

The traditional authorities were meticulous with the purification of the place and that everything that represented the bad times that have been experienced in lands of the so-called border, were not there.

For Monday, September 26, the population of La Guajira awaits announcements corresponding to the reopening of the border between Venezuela and Colombia.

Also this Sunday the 25th, a meeting of activists from the Society of Jesus and various international cooperation organizations that offer humanitarian aid was held in the same border town of La Guajira.
