Indigenous community in Amazonas denounces attempted invasion by armed groups

Indigenous communities continue to be stalked by irregular armed groups. The population of Pendare, Autana municipality in Amazonas state, denounced that for two days they have been victims of harassment and attempted invasion by groups related to drug trafficking.

This was confirmed by the coordinator of indigenous peoples of the Penal Forum, Olnar Ortiz, in a message from his Twitter account. The lawyer explained that these irregular groups, according to the claims of the community, are trying to enter their territory, which is part of the Territorial Guard of the Uwottüja people.

These groups, as Ortiz mentioned to SuchWhichThey use indigenous territories for clandestine runways and to receive or send drug shipments out of Amazonas.

The Territorial Guard, a group of indigenous leaders in charge of protecting these towns, asked the security forces, as well as the Public Ministry, to appear in the area.

On January 28, at the end of his visit to Venezuela, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, pointed out that the Venezuelan indigenous peoples “see their livelihoods, their culture and even their very existence threatened due to mining operations, drug trafficking organizations, and illegal armed groups.”

The Foro Penal lawyer also recalled that the activist Virgilio Trujillo Arana, killed with three shots on June 30, 2022 by unknown subjects in Puerto Ayacucho (capital of Amazonas), belonged to the Pendare community and had denounced the presence of of clandestine tracks in those areas and their use by gangs dedicated to drug trafficking.

To date, the authorities they have not been able to clarify the death of Trujillo and they have not captured those presumed involved or the direct assassins of the defender of indigenous peoples.
