“In celebration of World Sleep Day, all Wakefit employees have been granted a day off for March 17, 2023 – and with the long weekend to follow it’s the perfect time for a much needed break“The company’s human resources department informed the workers in an email.
This start-up company based in the southern city of Bangalore, which among other activities is dedicated to the manufacture and sale of mattresses, has been running a online survey on night habits before bedtime of the Indian population.
In its last edition, it reported a 11% increase in the number of people who say they wake up tiredwhile 21% more than in the previous publication said they felt sleepy during the workday.
World Sleep Day is celebrated each year on the Friday before the March equinox or on the third Friday of the same month, and was created by members of the medical community with the goal of raising awareness of the need to prevent sleep disorders and, where appropriate, try to dominate them.
Although official data on Indian sleep quality is lacking, a study by Professor Gomathi Ramaswamy, among others, and published in the National Medical Journal of India in 2021, recorded poor sleep quality in more than 36% of participantsresidents of rural communities in the eastern state of Pondicherry.
Other research, produced by scholar Samhita Panda in 2012, concluded that between 20 and 34.4% of Indians in the south of the country suffer from sleep disordersabove the world average.
Tiredness, headache or lack of concentration These are some of the consequences of poor sleep quality, which can even lead to disorders such as depression, anxiety, or irritability.
