Independent workers: SUNAT raises the limit to not pay Income Tax in 2025

SUNAT

Good news for independent workers in Peru. The National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) has adjusted the amounts for the payment of Income Tax (IR) by 2025, benefiting those with lower incomes.

According to a new resolution from SUNAT (Superintendency Resolution No. 000297-2024/SUNAT), workers who issue receipts for electronic fees and who have monthly income that does not exceed S/ 3,901 soles, will not have the obligation to make payments on account of Income Tax. In other words, if your monthly income is below this figure, you will be exempt from this payment.

This change is due to the increase in the Tax Tax Unit (UIT), which will go from S/ 5,150 in 2024 to S/ 5,350 by 2025. This adjustment in the UIT directly impacts the Income Tax calculations.

Suspension of payments for annual income less than S/ 46,813

In addition, SUNAT establishes that those independent workers who estimate that their annual income from Fourth Category Income (receipts for fees) or from Fourth and Fifth Category Income (combination of receipts for fees and salaries) will not exceed S/ 46,813 during the 2025, they may request the suspension of withholdings or payments on account of Income Tax.

This means that if you project a low annual income, you can avoid having this tax withheld.

Directors, trustees and other professionals also considered

This regulation also benefits professionals who perform functions such as company directors, trustees, agents, business managers or executors, as long as their total monthly income (including income for these functions and other Fourth and/or Fifth Category Income) does not exceed S/ 3,121. These professionals may also request suspension if they project annual income less than S/ 37,450.

What happens if I exceed the limits?

It is important to keep in mind that, if during 2025 your income exceeds the established amounts (either the monthly or annual limit), you must declare and pay the corresponding Income Tax for the entire income obtained in the month in which the limit was exceeded.
