Independent platforms confirm three new femicides in Cuba in 2025

Havana/The independent platforms Yo Sí Te Creo and Alas Tensas reported this Monday of two more femicides that occurred in Cuba and confirmed another that had already been exposed on social networks in 2025, so the total of sexist murders last year rose to 43 – according to the count of 14ymedio– based on the records of both organizations and social media reports.

The most recent confirmed case is that of Yuleidis Sánchez Rodríguez43 years old, who was attacked by her partner on December 31 on a public street, near her home in the Altamira District, in Santiago de Cuba, and died from her injuries on January 1.

The feminists pointed out that Sánchez’s attacker – a mother of three children – had a history of sexist violence and previous complaints by the victim.

The platforms also reported on the death of Roxana Donatien Celian, 21, due to sexist violence, which occurred on July 2 at the hands of her partner in the home they both shared in the town of Juruquey, in the province of Camagüey.

The other victim is Iveth Aldana, 54, who was attacked by her ex-partner on August 5 at her work in the city of Bayamo, eastern Granma province.

In their new report, the activists indicated that they still have three pending cases to confirm.

An EFE analysis, based on figures from these platforms, indicated that in 2025, 81% of the attackers of victims of gender violence were the partners of the murdered Cuban women, and that five of the feminicides had criminal records or were reported by the victim before committing the crime.

The activists have insisted on demanding “a comprehensive law on gender violence, shelters for women at risk, protection protocols, transparent official data and effective public prevention policies.”

In the Cuban Penal Code, feminicide is not classified as a specific crime, nor is the use of the terms “feminicide” or “sexist crime” common in state media.

Feminist organizations have also advocated for a “state of emergency due to gender violence” to be declared on the Island.

At the end of last November, the National Organization of Collective Law Firms opened an office in Havana to assist and provide legal advice to victims of sexist violence in Cuba.

A national system for “registration, attention, follow-up and monitoring” of sexist violence was approved

In addition, a national system for “registration, attention, monitoring and monitoring” of sexist violence in the country was approved and the launch of the “No more” campaign was announced, focused on the prevention and response to aggressiveness against women.

Cuba is currently among the countries with the most femicides in Latin America, according to studies, with 1.4 murders per 100,000 women.

In 2024, this diary counted 52 femicides from independent records. According to figures from the Cuban Observatory on Gender Equality, last year a total of 76 gender-related murders were tried in the country, in which the victims were over 15 years old. The agency does not specify the dates the crimes were committed, but it is most likely that they occurred in 2023 and 2024.

According to independent counts, from 2019 until this Wednesday, the Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo observatories in Cuba have documented 313 murders due to sexist violence on the Island, “a figure that represents only an under-reporting of gender violence” in the country.
