Independent media outlets launch campaign for the right of access to public information in Cuba

Medios de prensa independientes lanzan campaña por el derecho de acceso a la información pública en Cuba

MIAMI, United States.- Several Cuban press outlets and projects, including CubaNet, have come together to present a joint campaign in favor of the right of access to public information on the island, a right of all citizens and an obligation to all the states.

According to a statement published by the sponsors of the “Right to Know” campaign, “without truthful and timely information, it is impossible to make decisions for our daily lives or express ourselves freely and well-founded.”

“Citizens have the right to know where and how to receive public services, to know what the state budget is invested in, and what decisions are made and affect your daily life”, and “providing this information is an obligation of the States”, assures the document.

Right to know

“Given that access to public information constitutes a “key-right” (it can help citizens to demand other rights with greater certainty and justification), the media and Cuban projects have come together in coordination with the Regional Alliance for the Freedom of Expression and Information to present a joint campaign in favor of the right of access to public information”.

Right to know

A web page created as a result of the campaign offers information and some data in this regard, such as that Cuba, Bolivia and Venezuela are the countries in the region that do not have functional regulations for access to public information; and in Latin America the right to information is little known and used, the bodies that must guarantee it have limited independence, and an illegitimate use of exceptions to deny information prevails.

Together with CubaNet, Tensas Wings, the Cuban Alliance for Inclusion, Inverted Tree, Diario de Cuba, El Estornudo, El Toque, Hypermedia, Periodismo de Barrio, Rialta and Tremenda Nota have joined the “Right to Know” campaign.

“The constitutional recognition of the right should be sufficient to promote requests for public information or for the government to publish it autonomously,” they explain.
