HAVANA, Cuba. – Independent journalist Julio Aleaga Pesant was the victim of a violation of his home on Tuesday in the Havana neighborhood of Vedadoby an unknown person who was allegedly preparing to steal.
According to what Aleaga Pesant told CubaNet, The incident took place at 11:00 a.m. on August 13. The offender proceeded practically in the same way modus operandi that another one that broke in on March 25thwhen the personal computer was stolen (laptop) of the independent journalist.
“The man destroyed the front door again. He looked like the one who robbed on March 25. I was working in the room, editing videos. I went out and saw him; he wanted to confuse me and I went straight to close the door so he couldn’t leave,” she said.
According to the activist and reporter, the offender was a corpulent man of approximately 1.85 meters in height. “I sat him on the balance [sillón] from the room and called the police at 106,” he said. “I told the police Police: ‘I have a thief in my house, I have a knife in my hand and I am going to kill him.’ The police came running,” he added.
According to the collaborator of 14ymedio, The uniformed officers searched the criminal and found a knife, an awl and two rods (“one hook-shaped and one normal, small, that fit in a backpack”).
This is the second such incident to occur at the independent journalist’s home this year. In the robbery that took place at the end of March, the alleged offender forced open the front door with a crowbar and stole a bicycle, a laptop and one tablet broken down. On that occasion they destroyed the mahogany Republican style door, which is difficult to rebuild.
The reporter regretted that violence had reached that area of El Vedado, visited by both Cubans and foreigners, because of the presence of private cafes such as La Chuchería, El Tablazo, the renowned Casa Mía restaurant, the Grand Aston hotel and the Atlantis building, among other establishments, on its premises.
