Independent Cuban Film Showcase in Germany

More than twenty audiovisuals by Cuban filmmakers are projected these days at the Documenta 15 event, based in Germany, one of the most important meetings in the art world that is held every five years in the German city of Kassel.

The exhibition includes feature films, documentaries and fictional shorts representative of Cuban independent cinema, most of them made so far in the 21st century and directed by young filmmakers.

Several of these filmmakers participate in the exhibition, organized by the Hannah Arendt Artivism Institute created by visual artist Tania Bruguera.

The curatorship is Bruguera and the young director Jose Luis Aparicio, creator of the initiative Cuban cinema in quarantinea project that works as an online archive of independent Cuban cinema.

Similarly, filmmakers, cultural promoters and researchers participate in workshops and conferences related to the cuban cinemawhich cover topics such as censorship in national cinema, presence of the woman in Cuban cinematography, the national production at the beginning of the 60s of the last century and during the stage of the Special Period, as well as the exhibition of young cinema, themes related to the panorama of current Cuban contemporary cinema.

Filmmakers based inside and outside the country participate in Documenta 15, which will run until September 25. About 1,000 artists participate, mostly from Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Among the activities presented by the Hannah Arendt Institute of Artivism There is also the Operative Factography project as well as meetings and conferences on Cuban artivism and the various forms of resistance through art.

The video-performance of the artist Sandra Ceballos, as well as the discussion on current Cuban graphics and its relationship with artivism, will be other activities offered these days by the space programmed by the institution.

Documenta 15 is held every five years in the German city of Kassel, with 32 exhibition halls throughout the city, in an event that in this edition focuses more on the processes and projects of collective creation within art, than on individual works.
