Indecopi on oil spill: "Repsol's responsibility is aggravated for not activating insurance policy on time"

The National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) asked the Spanish company Repsol to send the insurance and reinsurance policy that it contracted globally to remedy the damage caused by the spill of some 6,000 barrels of oil in the sea

According to the executive president of Indecopi, Julián Palacín, the policy should have been activated on Sunday, January 16. In addition, an international adjuster had to be appointed and the necessary funds used to contract the specialized companies that were in charge of the ecological cleaning.

We hope that Repsol, today, Friday, January 21, will deliver the insurance and reinsurance policy of the Spanish parent company for all subsidiaries in the world and the local insurance policy, the contact of the international adjuster that we hope has been appointed and that with these coverages start with ecological cleaning, decontaminate the sea and prevent it from advancing to the beaches in the north of the country. Compensation to the Peruvian State and consumers will be seen later“, He said.

The executive added that “not having activated, to date, the insurance and reinsurance policy and the international protocols to mitigate the damage through specialized companies, would aggravate the liability that could even be criminal against Repsol managers, board of directors and advisors who know these procedures“.
