The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), directed by Marco Lavagna, finally published the results of the census 2022, carried out on May 18, where for the first time a combined system was used that included the traditional house-to-house interview with the digital modality of self-registration.
The data of the census show that 46,082,160 people inhabit the entire Argentine territory, being 51.76% male, 48.22% female and the remaining 0.02% did not identify with either of these two genders. However, it they accounted 2,962 people living on the streets, a lower number than the real one, since those who are in shelters and inns still need to be included in the calculation.
According to the entity of statistics and censuses, the May procedure, which cost 15 billion pesos, covered 98.6% of segments at the national level, which constitutes, “at the international level, an extremely good level,” Lavagna asserted. On the other hand, according to the information available in the same month in which the censusthere were 47,327,407 inhabitants, 1,250,000 more than the figure reported today.
The national director of Social and Population Statistics, Gladys Massé, explained the results that “There is an increase in female predominance over the total population. This is generated by the demographic transition process, the demographic aging that is due to the decline in fertility and the greater life expectancy that favors women more”.
Of the 24 districts that make up the country (23 provinces and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA)), the province of Buenos Aires is the one with the largest population, with 17,569,053 people, followed by Córdoba with 3,978,984. inhabitants and Santa Fe with 3,556,522 registered citizens. CABA, for its part, has a not inconsiderable number of 3,120,612 people.
Lavagna on the digital census
The director of INDEC emphasized the approval by society of the digital methodology to carry out the registration. “The census digital was one of the big news. It is transitional, it marks methodological changes for the future. At first we did not know how the population would receive it and it was a resounding success. 65% of the people who did the census digital, they did it through the mobile phone and 35% through the computer”.
“The 11th National Census of Population, Households and Housing that took place between March 16 and May 18, 2022 inaugurated a new stage in the history of census operations in the Argentine Republic” and added: “55.28% of the population answered the census digital”.
