Yelmira Jiménez, spokeswoman for the Inter-Guild Transporters Command, emphasized that it is necessary to put into practice strategies such as a direct transport bonus for users, whose current salary would not be enough to pay for the ticket for the whole month. She specified that the increase in the price of diesel at service stations will above all affect the units that provide services for suburban routes.
Carriers hope that the adjustment in the price of diesel — after more than two years subsidized for the public and private transport sector, as well as heavy cargo — and went to cost 0.50 cents on the dollar, will translate into an increase in the price of the passage. This was stated by the president of Líneas La Voluntad de Gandhi (UD5 of Caricuao) and spokeswoman for the Inter-union Command, Yelmira Jiménez.
In a telephone interview, he revealed that this May 1, spokesmen for the transportation sector met with authorities of the Venezuelan government. From the meetings they hope that compensatory measures for drivers will emerge. “If they have already established the cost of diesel, the logical thing would be to activate contingency tables to avoid transport collapse,” he said.

Jiménez asserted that the sector agrees to pay the actual fuel rate. He asserted that this would contribute to the regularization of obtaining hydrocarbons and “we avoid falling into the mafias.” On the other hand, he emphasized that, for example, proposals such as a direct transport voucher for users, whose current salary would not be enough to pay for the ticket for the whole month, should be put into practice.
He specified that the increase in the price of diesel in service stations affects above all the units that provide services for suburban routes. “Diesel is used above all on suburban routes, they are more modern and larger units, such as the YuTong, Encava or Iveco,” he pointed out.
Yelmira Jiménez emphasized that it was time to adjust the rates, since this year no official modification had been made, although some units and lines are charged at a premium. He recalls that article 77 of the Transportation Law establishes that rates must be adjusted in the first quarter of the year.
“Article 77. It is up to the competent administrative authority to establish, in the first quarter of each year, the fare regime for public passenger transport, in which the participation of the sectors involved will be guaranteed,” reads the law.
He also recalled that in recent days the value of the dollar has increased and that this has a direct impact on the cost structure. Jiménez hopes that with the collection of the fuel, the price of the trip rates in the transport units will be revealed.
Freight carriers protested over diesel
In Araure Heavy cargo transporters blocked the José Antonio Páez highway, in protest against the increase in diesel. The demonstration was led by farmers and drivers.
The president of the Heavy Cargo Transport Block of the Portuguesa state, Aldo Herrera, who warns that if this increase is maintained they will go to a transport strike. “This new price came into effect last Sunday, May 29, and the transport sector was not consulted or informed. For this reason, carriers from both Guanare and Araure Acarigua, we are going to hold an assembly to define what actions we are going to take due to this increase », he asserted.
Herrera stated that this adjustment in diesel prices not only affects heavy-duty drivers, but also vehicles such as trucks, dump trucks, cranes and even ambulances, for which he urged the sector that depends on diesel to join the actions that will be undertaken in the coming days, if a fair price for fuel is not specified.
According to El Pitazo, the drivers pointed out that between the municipalities of Páez, Araure, Turén, Esteller, Agua Blanca and San Rafael de Onoto, the union accounts for some 4,000 units affiliated with the Heavy Load Block, which work on diesel, and all of them are affected by the decision made by PDVSA, and that -as stated- the opinion of the carriers was not taken into account.
