Although the increase in cement and rebar in recent months will have an impact on the construction sector, this would not be so significant on the price of housing, due to the inflation levels that the country maintains, Eliseo Cristopher understands.
According to the president of the Dominican Confederation of Micro, Small and Medium Construction Companies (Copymecom), these increases in materials could increase the cost of housing by 6% or 7%, but this should not cause them to stop build or that low-cost housing moves to another category.
“These are two areas that are moving, but not so that housing construction increases 100%. Now housing could increase by RD$60,000 or RD$100,000, but this would not mean that low-cost housing would disappear.”
