Increase in demands for care in women's support centers

The Minister for Women, Celina Lezcano, acknowledged that the demand for care increased in the different state support centers for women, despite having “the same human resources” and with the “lowest budget in the nation.”

The head of the Women’s portfolio asserted that “the General Budget of the Nation must be restructured to be able to work” adequately in the women’s care centers throughout the country, where between 200 and 300 cases are attended per day.

The coverage of the General Budget of the Nation (PGN) projected for the fiscal year of the year 2023 of the Ministry of Women is 18,774,546,212 guaraníes (about 2,607 million dollars), which represents, according to Lezcano, 0.02% of the country’s total budget.

The support centers should have “the same power to serve the number of women” despite the low budget but, according to the minister’s words, “the scope will be much greater if we have more women’s care centers in all departments of the country.

Lezcano specified that these offices provide different services, including the “prevention and safety” of women.

The death of a 41-year-old woman in the Loma Pytá neighborhood, in the capital Asunción, shook public opinion last Wednesday after learning that she had been shot three times by her alleged ex-partner, a 62-year-old former police officer.

This is the fifth death in 2023 of a woman, preliminarily attributed by the authorities as an alleged case of femicide.

Nails 482 women went to the Ciudad Mujer center, the main one in the country, located south of Asunción, “the day after” the information about the alleged case of femicide in Loma Pytá was disseminated.said the minister.

Ciudad Mujer offers, among other services, advice, support and assistance to women in any case of violence.

In the minister’s opinion, the fact that women go to these state centers shows the confidence of “what is being done” in the body.

At least 200 women work in the different women’s support centers located throughout the countryaccording to information provided to EFE by the ministry.

The different support centers of the Ministry for Women offered 126,490 services between January and December 2022, to some 44,215 women throughout the country.

Ciudad Mujer attended 18,527 women, while the Women’s Care Service (Sedamur), which provides legal guidance, psychological support, referral and follow-up of cases, received 1,450 women. EFE
