A 54% increase in emergencies attended from January 1 to 31, 2023, registered the Meritorious Fire Department of the Republic of Panama (BCBRP).
The entity revealed that in that period it responded to 3,135 emergencies throughout the country, 54% more compared to January 2022, when there were 2,035.
The monthly report issued by BCBRP Radio Control highlights that the emergencies that are most attended to continue to be those caused by Africanized bees and grass fires, which also registered significant increases.
In January, 1,112 calls were responded to for the presence and/or attack of Africanized bees, which represents an increase of 40% compared to the same period in 2022, when there were 635 incidents.
The regional areas most affected by these incidents are Veraguas (233), Panama (205) and Los Santos (135).
In the case of grassland fires, 581 calls were responded to, while in January 2022 this figure rose to 497. The largest number of these were controlled in West Panama (127), Coclé (115) and Panama (108).
Other types of fires that also registered increases in January 2023 are structural ones, with 75, 22 more than in January last year. The largest number of these occurred in Panama with 28.
There were also 48 vehicular fires, 13 more than in January 2022.
Other emergencies that generate a significant number of exits by firefighters are wounded care (286), traffic accidents (264), garbage on fire (185), electrical faults (130), gas leaks (95), fallen tree (90) and animal rescue (86).
