The senators of the group in formation Partido Demócratas, Matías Walker and Ximena Rincón, announced their administrative incorporation to the committee of the Evópoli bench, thus joining the opposition bench to the Government of President Gabriel Boric.
The information was provided by Senator Rincón herself, when she asked to speak in the Senate Chamber to communicate the determination, assuring that they have no space “in the decisions of the Corporation.”
“I want to inform the Board that an official letter is going to enter, by which, as parliamentarians who today do not have space either in the decisions of the Corporation, or in the infrastructure, we are going to reach an agreement accepting an offer from the bench of Evópoli to integrate it administratively,” said the former Christian Democrat.
The fact radically changes the panorama of the composition of the Senate, since now it is the opposition that happens to have 27 of 50 possible votes, which is why they become a majority in the decisive instances within the Corporation.
The foregoing should not be overlooked, even more so taking into account that a series of important discussions are underway in Congress, among them, measures related to the fight against crime, the sixth withdrawal from pension funds or, without going further, the tax reform of the Executive.
It should be remembered that on February 14, the Superior Court of the Christian Democrats (DC) resolved the official expulsion from the store of parliamentarians Matías Walker and Ximena Rincón, after having carried out a campaign in favor of Rejection, a position contrary to that adopted by the community in its National Board.
This step aside from the ruling party given by Ximena Rincón occurs after her controversial intervention regarding the tax reform project last Wednesday, when the senator entered the chamber of the Chamber to instruct former deputies of the Christian Democratic Party not to vote in favor of the idea of legislating said initiative. This generated indignation in the ruling party, which saw one of the most relevant and expected bills of this Government fall, because it would provide the resources for key reforms such as pensions and would help finance public policies such as nurseries, reduction of waiting lists , increase in the Universal Guaranteed Pension, among others.
Deputy Gonzalo Winter was very harsh regarding the role that Democrats and particularly Ximena Rincón had: “I was surprised that the Democrats (ex-DC) bench did not vote in favor. I was surprised by the public position that they take saying that they understand the need of a new tax pact in Chile, who understand the need for redistribution and to raise the Universal Guaranteed Pension (PGU). If that was true, the Democratic caucus could have asked for a separate vote on everything they did not like or have presented indications , ask for a separate vote, but none of that happened in the Finance Committee,” he told The counter after rejecting the idea of legislating the tax reform.
