Grupo Bancolombia, through its Department of Economic Research, stated that the income from the tourism sectormeasured through transactionality, increased by 32% compared to 2019, and a recovery of 160% compared to 2020.
Regarding the regions, the banking entity highlighted that all show important recoveries, above the pre-pandemic. However, Antioquia was the region with the most recovery, with 62% growth in revenues. This department is followed by the southern regions, with a 29% increase; the Center with 22% and Bogotá, with a recovery of 11%.

Within market revenues, the ecotourism segment closes the year with a significant growth of 278% compared to 2019, followed by hotels and tourism with an increase of 35% and travel agencies with 23% growth.
HOTEL OCCUPANCY
The report also emphasizes that the hotel and restaurant sector reached a 59.7% growth versus 2020.
“This level which was above our forecast, and mainly driven during the second half of the year 2021”, indicated the study of the banking group.
As projections, Bancolombia estimates that 2022 will be a year of more stable growth continuity, for which they foresee an increase of 9.4% in the recovery of the sector.
Occupancy also showed a strong recovery during the second half of 2021. In fact, it closed the year exceeding the levels obtained in 2019, the best year for tourism in Colombia. The destinations that stood out for the highest rate of rented rooms were Cartagena with 571.7%) and the Caribbean with 46.5%, stood out as the destinations with the highest influx. But, they continue to lag behind pre-pandemic levels, along with the Coffee Region and Bogotá.
While Bolívar, Córdoba and Sucre did manage to exceed their 2019 accommodation indicators.
“We expect that the occupation during 2022 will be above pre-pandemic levels close to 53%,” the entity said.
