Income from exports of the sheep sector exceeded those of the year before covid

During 2021, foreign exchange earnings to the country from total exports of the sheep sector were 62% higher than those achieved throughout 2020, totaling US$ 303.2 million (against US$ 186.9 million).

What was obtained from external placements during the past year exceed the income of 2019, the last year prior to the impact of the health emergency due to the covid pandemic, given that US$ 276.2 million entered in that fiscal year.

What’s more, It is quite close to the best record of the last five years, the US$ 327.4 obtained from exports in 2018.

The data was provided to The Observer by the Uruguayan Wool Secretariat (SUL) –in all cases these are figures of “completed exports” provided to the SUL by the National Customs Directorate (DNA)–.

During the year 2021, the share of wool and wool products remains above the share of sheep meat within the total exports of the sheep category.

Exports of wool and wool products registered a rise of 66.6% while exports of meat increased by 65.1%.

Exports of wool and wool products during 2021 exceeded the total amount exported during 2020, as happened in sheep meat and the fat by-product of wool and lanolin (+72%). The three products grew strongly compared to 2020. On the other hand, there were falls in live sheep (-99.3%) and sheep skins (-19.3%).

Wool and wool products represent 54.5% of the total exported (US$ 165.1 million), while meat represents 42.1% (US$ 127.5 million).

In terms of physical volume, During the period considered, Uruguay exported a total of 31.5 million kilos of wool equivalent dirty base (considering dirty, washed and combed wool), 65% more than in the same previous period. 54% was exported combed, 20% washed and the remaining 26% dirty. Foreign sales in physical volume increased by 65% ​​for worsted wool, 36% for washed wool and 96% for dirty wool. There were more than 30 destinations for foreign sales of wool during the period considered.

Analyzing in terms of value, exports of dirty, washed and combed wool totaled US$ 159 million, which implies a rise of 69% compared to the same previous period. The main destination in terms of value of exports of this group of products continued to be China, with 27% of the total. It is followed by Germany (16%) and Italy (16%), Bulgaria (7.6%), Egypt (5.2%) and Turkey (4.4%).

In terms of physical volume, During the period January to December 2021, Uruguay exported a total of 23,670,308 kilos (shipping weight) of sheep meat, 49% more than in the same previous period. There were 24 countries as a destination for sheep meat sales, with China being the leader in purchases with 81%, while Brazil acquired 9%. Brazil registered a drop of 17% compared to the same previous period and China increased its purchases by 84%.

In terms of value, there was an increase of 65% more compared to the previous period (US$ 127.5 million) and the main destinations were: China (78%), Brazil (12%) and Canada (2.3%).
