‘INCEL’ groups, hook for vulnerable young people that put them at risk

'INCEL' groups, hook for vulnerable young people that put them at risk

Between machismo and feminist movement

The ‘Incl’ spaces act as “resonance box” with messages that normalize misogyny and machismo, says Iván Salazar, professor of the Master in Clinical Psychology from the Ibero -American University.

“Digital violence not only remains in the cloud, but also circulates or travels through physical spaces,” he says to Political expansion.

A risk to the attack in CCH Sur is to see what happened as a problem of a single young man, when it is a symptom for the radical speeches that feed in the ‘Incl’ communities, says Salazar.

“The challenge is not to individualize it and understand it as an expression of a structural crisis where many young people are trying to return to these speeches and this false promise to recover what we call ‘traditional masculinity’,” says Ibero’s specialist.

Salazar is necessary to consider the context that young men face in an economic and social aspect, where it is increasingly difficult for them to access opportunities and create a life project, not only the emotional and mental state of the individual.

The radicalization of ‘Incl’ speeches, loaded with violence against women, is also a reaction to the progress of feminist movements and the fight for women’s rights in the last 15 years, says Silvia Soler, interim director of the Simone Leadership Institute of Beauvoir (ILSB).

“A main component is the macho resentment towards what they perceive as strong women or feminities, with too many rights according to them, which transforms them to violent subjectivities that can be from speeches in forums to everyday expressions of violence as we unfortunately saw in CCH Sur,” he shares in an interview.

For Soler, teenagers and young people are especially vulnerable to this type of speeches where expectations of hegemonic masculinity are handled, characterized by sexual and economic success, physical attractiveness and social domain.

“We have to generate alternative models of masculinity, that a young man does not feel that because at age 17 he has not had an affective sex experience is already an insurmountable frustration in his life project. We have to inhabit masculinities that can fail, which can be caregivers, which can be vulnerable, express their emotions and that feel questioned and worried about others and others,” he says.
