The work permits granted in 2021 totaled 1,155 and those granted between January and May 2022 are about 602, announced the president of the Institute for Children and Adolescents (INAU), Pablo Abdala, in the presentation of figures related to work in this age group. “The reality of Uruguay is hopeful and we have expectations of advancing in the dignity of children and in eradicating illegal child labor,” he said.
Also attending the conference, held this Friday the 10th, were the vice president of INAU, Aldo Velázquez; the director of the agency’s National Child and Adolescent Labor Inspection Department, Ema Buxeda, and the sub-inspector of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security Silvana Bittencourt.
Abdala recalled that the United Nations Organization determined that June 12 be celebrated as the World Day Against Child Labor and that the goal is to eradicate illegal child labor by 2030.
“The reality of Uruguay is hopeful and we have expectations of advancing in the dignity of children, in eradicating child labor, which represents risks of emotional and physical harm for children under 15 years of age, as well as in the regulation of legal adolescent work for older people. of that age”, stressed the hierarch.
He explained that the objective is to improve the response provided by management and reaffirmed that there are regulations in force both nationally and internationally.
In addition, he announced that the allocation of human, technical and budgetary resources for the Child Labor Inspection will be reinforced, as well as the training and awareness of officials. He also specified that it is necessary to inform the population about the risks of hiring children under 15 years of age and that it is essential to manage the work card.
“The data shows that there are signs of greater formalization and inspections, they are encouraging indicators. It is an issue that has to be on the agenda of the Government and of the whole of society,” said Abdala.
Of the 1,155 permits in 2021, 498 correspond to Montevideo and 657 to the interior of the country. Labor inspections were 1,606, of which 356 are from the capital and 1,250 from the interior. Of these inspections, 1,375 were routine, 186 for working conditions, 42 for complaints and 3 for accidents.
Also in that year, the audiovisual production activity employed 120 minors between 4 months and 18 years old, in 15 filmings in our country, in accordance with the legislation and regulations.
Between January and May 2022, 602 authorizations of this type were granted, the inspections add up to 834, some 195 were carried out in Montevideo and 639 in the interior. On 5 occasions we proceeded due to accidents and on 17 due to complaints.
In Montevideo, 48% of work permits by category correspond to general services, mostly in the Yo Estudio y Trabajo program, 38% to gastronomy and the remaining 14% to sports institutions, banking, commerce, culture and hospitality.
