The president of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh), Colonel José Pereira, together with the Deputy Minister of Environment Management, Hernán Toro, during the First National Congress of Researchers on Climate Change, presented the new drought monitor and floods, where they focus on diagnosing all the necessary forecasts to prepare the country for the dry season.
Hernán Toro indicated that the country’s network of hydrometeorological stations and community rain gauges are being expanded. “We are teaching our communities how to build a rain gauge with recycled material, PVC pipes, plastic bottles to build risk maps and equipment,” said the Vice Minister.
Toro reported that in the face of the El Niño phenomenon, the body of researchers is considering rainfall, soil moisture, evapotranspiration, the vegetation index and air temperature, with the purpose of informing the government and farmers who take their forecasts in the event of a drought.
Vice Minister Toro commented that they have an articulated network of street and community chiefs who, through the implementation of community rain gauge construction plans and risk plans, can provide concrete and precise data for the drought monitor.
“The equipment that has been developed in Inameh through an entire infrastructure that has been recovered in recent years is thanks to the support and investment of the Republic,” Toro argued.
