OVCS: Venezuela averaged 22 daily protests in the first quarter of 2022

Inaesin: 116 labor disputes recorded in May 2022

The Inaesin reported that 78% of the conflicts were concentrations, while 9% were expressed through marches

A total of 116 labor conflicts, of which the education sector played a leading role in 28% and health workers were present in 14% of the protests, was recorded in May 2022, the Observatory of Labor Conflict and Union Management, of the Institute of Higher Trade Union Studies (Inaesin).

Indeed, claims for decent wages (59%) led the reasons for workers’ disagreement in May, followed by non-compliance with collective agreements (9%) and poor working conditions (3%). Unjustified dismissals of workers represented barely 1% of labor complaints.

Bolívar monopolized 20% of the demonstrations of discontent. By far, Sucre ranked second with 10% and the states of Falcón and Lara third with 9% each.

Most of the claims were made by public sector workers (87%). The presence of the unions in the conflicts was 66% during the fifth month of the year.

Up to 78% of the conflicts were concentrations, while 9% were expressed through marches.

The level of conflict does not stop. The regime’s offers for salary improvements and in some cases of working conditions for equipment, remain in rhetoric or short according to the reality of the country.

The health sector is one of those affected. In May they began the claim for the payment of bonuses that, after the salary increase decreed in March, seems to have been left in limbo with the salarization of the bonuses.

The information that retirees and pensioners have returned to the streets in search of a salary improvement stands out, since the amount they receive does not cover their basic needs. PDVSA retirees are still protesting the pension fund, more than 10 years after its embezzlement.

The active personnel of the companies belonging to the Venezuelan Guayana Corporation (CVG) expressed their dissatisfaction for the fortnightly payment between 50% and 60% less than the previous fortnight.

The CVG implemented a new salary scale that eliminates all the benefits already reflected in the different salary tables of each company, violating all laws and collective agreements.
