In the US, several NGOs unite in hopes of preventing Elon Musk from buying Twitter

Several NGOs defending fundamental rights have joined forces in the hope of preventing Elon Musk from buying Twitter, fearing that the tycoon will allow toxic behavior on the platform.

“If we don’t block this operation, he will give a megaphone to demagogues and extremists, who (…) incite hatred, violence and harassment,” Nicole Gille, CEO of Accountable Tech, said in a statement Friday.

This association, which militates for holding large digital companies responsible, along with a dozen others seek to pressure the authorities, shareholders and advertisers.

In particular, they call on regulators to “closely examine” the controversial project of the head of Tesla, which has already had numerous brushes with the US stock market regulator (SEC).

The coalition also hopes to “mobilize shareholders”, “very vulnerable” by the “erratic behavior of Elon Musk”, the organizations argue, recalling that Tesla shares “lost about a third of their value” since the beginning of April.

Among several other twists, the businessman indicated in mid-May that he would suspend the acquisition for 44,000 million dollars, while obtaining guarantees on spam, before retracting a few hours later.

At the end of May, Twitter shareholders filed a lawsuit against Musk, accusing him of having manipulated the market to take financial advantage of his acquisition operation.

As a result of this, the SEC revealed that it asked the manager for explanations about his acquisition of Twitter’s capital at the beginning of April.

NGOs also hope to win over brands, that are sensitive to content moderation, ensuring a politically correct environment for your ads.

Musk has said he wants free speech on Twitter, which he sees as a critical public space for democracies. He associates the current content moderation with a form of censorship, as do many Republicans.

On Friday, Twitter also announced that the deadline for the US competition authorities to launch an in-depth review of the operation had expired without taking up the case.
