In the opinion of Xavier Sáez Llorens, it is premature to say that we are facing the arrival of a fifth wave due to Covid-19

The pediatrician and infectologist, Xavier Sáez Llorens, stated this Tuesday that it is premature to say that we are facing the arrival of a fifth wave due to the increase in Covid-19 infections in the country.

“Not all of us agree to call it a fifth wave, I think the best thing for now is to call it a rebound in cases. Usually the waves occur when a new variant emerges, and so we have had waves like Alpha, Beta and recently omicron” he explained.

He also indicated that the cases have remained between 500 and 900 daily and normally, the previous waves have exceeded 1,000 to 1,500 daily cases of positivity, and we have varied between 5 and 12%.

“Calling it a wave seems a bit premature to me; there are certainly sublineages or subvariants of the omicron that are more transmissible than the original omicron, and these subvariants have caused these spikes in any part of the world,” said Sáez Llorens.

Regarding the total lifting of biosecurity measures, the doctor declared that the Government must put aside “paternalism” and eliminate this, since we must learn to live with the virus.

“I have always been saying it, we must lift those severe restrictions that the government has imposed so that the economy can be reactivated,” he pointed out.
