In the first public auction in Cuba, an embargoed Hyundai car is sold to a company

The Provincial Court of Havana has disclosed the First call to the public auction that is held in Cuba, a measure introduced in the Code of Processes approved at the end of 2021 and that allows the execution of a sentence in which the convicted person lacks funds to face the payment.

In this case, the auctioned item is a 2006 Hyundai Accent vehicle that comes with a minimum price of 64,051.03 Cuban pesos (about 2,700 dollars at the official exchange rate of 24 for 1 or just 366 dollars on the black currency market), the appraisal value, as it is in these cases, and which is far from market prices, where used cars do not go below $20,000.

The vehicle, white in color and with a gasoline engine 5301811, was owned by the company Pleatex Company INC, based in the British Virgin Islands and a branch in Havana, dedicated to the commercialization of industrial products and articles. The car was seized to satisfy a debt with the supposedly Spanish Blue Capital Partners SL, which was represented by a Cuban lawyer and of which there are currently no concrete signs of existence, except in Romania and Israel, where a company with this name is registered. same name.

Potentially interested parties must present their applications in the Commercial Chamber of the Provincial Court of Havana

Any natural or legal person can participate in the auction, as long as they are not a court official or lawyer for any of the parties involved in the case. To do this, they must be of legal age and resident in Cuba, meet the specific requirements to acquire an asset of this type, accept the existing title to the assets, their charges or encumbrances, declare that they are aware of the conditions of the process and prove the deposit in pesos. Cubans from the bond ordered by the court –equivalent to 30% of the appraised value, and in this case 19,215 pesos.

Potentially interested parties must present their requests in the Mercantile Chamber of the Havana Provincial Court, within 20 days from March 29, when the edict was published. In addition, they will be able to inspect the vehicle and its state of conservation, indicates the document, which adds that any payment must be made through bank transfer and never in cash.

The auction will put an end to a conflict that goes back a long way, since the lawsuit was filed five years ago, and has astonished countless citizens who have created a parallel debate on the networks from the official press about the relevance of an auction in a communist system that some consider typical of other systems. Other readers defend the appropriateness of public auctions as a way of executing sentences, something not intrinsic to capitalism, and what the majority show is stupor at the publicity that has been given to this procedure.
