The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) attended to a case of cattle screwworm in the municipality of Llera, Tamaulipas, the only active record in the border entities with the United States.
The agency reported that a six-day-old calf had a myiasis in the navel, although it did not specify how it became infected, since the case continues in the process of epidemiological investigation by the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica).
Until yesterday, Tamaulipas and Nuevo León were the only states that had registered infections since November 23, 2024, when the first one was reported in the country. Yesterday it was reported that one was detected in the state of Mexico.
Tamaulipas has counted only one and Nuevo León, three. As of December 31, 2025, there were 671 assets and 13,106 accumulated records.
On the same property in Tamaulipas there are 21 cattle of different ages, which are free of the plague.
To inactivate it, Senasica deployed specialized technical personnel to strengthen surveillance in the area and carried out epidemiological tracking and active search for suspected cases, in coordination with state government personnel.
Ten production units around the infected lot were visited and 325 cattle, sheep, goats, birds, horses, pigs, dogs, cats and hares were inspected, in none of which was the presence of screwworm found.

In addition, informative talks and training were given to local ranchers on recognition and early notification of compatible lesions, and fly trapping was reinforced by installing strategic traps in the area where the pest was detected.

The Rural Secretariat of the government of the state of Mexico announced that in the entity, specifically in the municipality of Tlatlaya, the first case of screwworm was documented, so it will reinforce the prevention strategy, in coordination with Senasica.
He reported that according to the Health Directorate of the state agency, the so-called “worm bug” was detected in the wound of a goat that was not treated, which was confirmed by Senasica and the United States-Mexico Commission for the Prevention of Foot and Mouth Disease and other Exotic Animal Diseases.
He indicated that state and federal authorities, together with livestock organizations, continue to actively search for possible infections; However, until now the health alert remains in the preventive phase.
